Overdraft Management

Avoiding unintentional inconveniences and fees is easier with these options.

Account Alerts

Keeping tabs on your checking account balance is the best way to avoid accidental overdrafts. Set up any or all of the following account alerts through Bank Independent Online and Mobile Banking services to receive alerts by email, text or upon login:

  • Balance so you'll know when an account reaches a certain threshold
  • Events like incoming direct deposits, funds transfer information, or statement notification
  • Items including cleared checks

Standard Overdraft Coverage*

For new accounts, after 60 days your account is reviewed to determine if overdraft protection is available for your account. Standard Overdraft Protection will help you avoid denied transactions, but according to federal regulations, you must tell us that you want it, or "opt in" for coverage for ATM withdrawals and everyday debit card transactions.

To Request, or "Opt In" to, Overdraft Coverage:
  • Click here to complete the form;
  • Call Customer Service at (256) 386-5000 or (877) 865-5050; or
  • Stop by any of our convenient branch locations.

Unless you opt in, you have NO overdraft coverage on ATM withdrawals and everyday debit card purchases. This means that if there are insufficient funds in your account to cover your purchase, your transaction will be declined at the point of sale.

$5 Daily Overdraft Safety Net**

We want to keep a small overdraft from leading to a big charge, so we won’t charge you NSF fees when you end the day with an overdrawn balance of $5 or less. No special enrollment is required, and all Bank Independent checking accounts, except Value Accounts, are eligible.

Other Overdraft Options

Bank Independent offers additional overdraft protection plans, including an Overdraft Line of Credit and the option of drawing funds from another Bank Independent account to cover a negative balance.

For more information on available overdraft options, stop by any sales office or call Customer Service at (256) 386-5000 or (877) 865-5050 Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. We're happy to find just the right solution for your needs.

*We will charge an NSF/Overdraft fee of $36 for each presentment that overdraws your account. We will not charge more than 6 NSF/Overdraft fees to your account in one business day. An NSF fee is a charge that is assessed when a presentment is returned by the bank due to insufficient funds in the account. An overdraft fee is a charge assessed when a presentment is paid by the bank on an account with insufficient funds. Standard overdraft practices apply when you have authorized us to pay, and we have agreed to pay checks and other transactions causing an overdraft through automatic bill payment and for checks and other transactions made using your account number. Whether your overdraft item will be paid is discretionary and we reserve the right not to pay. We will not authorize and pay overdrafts for ATM transactions or everyday debit card transactions unless you ask us to. Deposits are required within 45 days of an overdraft. If an overdraft is not paid in full within this period, your account is subject to close. See a Personal Banker for details on minimum balance requirements and monthly maintenance fees for all deposit accounts. (Link Schedule of fees)
**An NSF fee will not be charged to an account if the ending daily balance in the account is overdrawn by $5.00 or less.
